Casual Volunteers  Program

In addition to employees, Montana law requires employers to cover their elected officials, volunteer emergency service workers (firefighters, police, ambulance workers) and court appointed workers. A member may also elect to cover their other volunteers.

MMIA Member-Owners' Volunteer Categories

The MMIA recommends each city/town elect coverage on all volunteers and not just a select group or groups. The coverage is inexpensive and provides the city/town with exclusive remedy should a volunteer sustain an injury or develop a disease while serving in their capacity as a municipal volunteer. Without workers’ compensation coverage, a volunteer’s remedy would be to file a liability claim which generally costs more due to damages beyond wage loss and medical.

The consistent volunteer is an individual who volunteers more than 15 hours per month and the assumed payroll is $100 per month. These volunteers should be reported on the workers' compensation quarterly payroll report to MMIA.

The regular volunteer is an individual who volunteers between one and fifteen hours per month and the assumed payroll is $50 per month. These volunteers should be reported on the workers' compensation quarterly payroll report to MMIA.

The casual volunteer is an individual who volunteers for a specific event sponsored by a city/town.

These are the special event volunteers, and the assessment is a flat fee based on the number of volunteers per event. You can access the application to request workers’ compensation coverage for these events by utilizing the “Casual Volunteer Coverage Application” button above. Coverage for casual volunteers must be requested and approved prior to the event. The MMIA will review applications for compliance with underwriting criteria and may approve, deny and/or request additional information. If denied, the applicant will receive notification of the denial. If approved, notice will be sent to the member including instructions for payment and submission of the volunteer roster. The Member must submit a roster with all volunteer names and the last four numbers of their social security number or date of birth within two days of the event.
